What is Active Voice?
The form of action/ sentence that the subject is a doer

  • I kick John
  • He loves me
Examples of active voice divided by tenses.

  • Present Simple -- I teach him.
  • Present Continuous -- I am teaching him.
  • Present Perfect -- I have taught him.
  • Past Simple -- I taught him.
  • Past Continuous -- I was teaching him.
  • Past Perfect -- I had taught him.
  • Future Simple -- I will teach him.
  • Future Continuous -- I will be teaching him.
  • Future Perfect -- I will have taught him.

What is adverb?--It is a word that explain the characteristic or give you more details about "verbs" such as quickly, usually and fast etc.

John quickly walk to me (adverb quickly explain about how John walk.)

Must know about adverbs

  • Don't be confused. It is similar to adjective but it's different! (explain noun and explain verb.)
  • Most adverbs are in the form of adjective + ly such as quickly, slowly and really etc.
  • Some adjectives need to change its form before putting ly such as angrily.
  • However, some words (very few) have the same form for adjective and adverb such as fast.
Adjective -- That was a fast running.
Adverb -- John run so fast (Don't use fastly. It's totally wrong!!)

Definition of Helping Verbs -- According to the rule that every sentence needs to have at least one verb. Therefore, we need helping verb to fullfill this rule for the sentence that doesn't require main verb.

Examples of Helping Verbs
-- Linda is a doctor.
-- I don't believe you anymore.

Must know about Helping Verbs

  • Helping verb can be called Auxiliary verb
  • According to the rule that one sentence needs to have at least one verb, we need helping verb to be in a sentence that main verb does not exist
    -- John is a doctor (Verb to be "is" acts as a verb in the sentence)
  • The name "helping verb" derives from its functionality to "help" main verb.
    -- I do not love you anymore (Do is a helping verb to help "love" in negative sentence.)
    -- Can you take that book for me? (Can is a helping verb to help "take" in question sentence.)

Definition of Main Verbs -- The type of verb that has the meaning in the word itself. Without main verbs in a sentence, we would not know about the meaning of the sentence.

Example of Main Verbs

-- John walks across the street. (You wouldn't know the meaning of the sentence without the word "walks")
-- Marry runs so fast. (Likewise, you wouldn't know the meaning of the sentence without the word "walks"

Must know about Main Verbs

  • Main verb is sometimes called "lexical verbs."
  • There are many forms of verbs depending on the tense.
    -- John walks across the street. -- Present Simple Tense
    -- I saw John walked across the street yesterday -- Past Simple tense
    -- I will walk across this street again tomorrow -- Future Simple tense
  • Verb is also used differently in active voice and passive voice form.
    -- I kick John -- Active voice
    -- I am kicked by John -- Passive voice

  • Use apostrophe ('s) for making the posessive noun.

  • Use s' for making plural possessive noun that end with s or es

Structure of Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Subject + had + been + V ing + (object)

When do we use Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Similar to Past Perfect Tense, it is used when there are two situations happened in the past. Using "Past Perfect Continuous Tense" with the situation that happened first and using Past Simple Tense with another situation.

However, Past Perfect Continuous Tense is used to highlight the first actions more than Past Perfect Tense or to give the feeling that the first action is happened for quite a long time.

John told me that he had been waiting for Marry for 2 hours.

Must know about Past Perfect Continuous Tenses

-- This tense is most used with teh verb "wait". Otherwise, it's not popular anymore.

When do we use Present Simple Tense?

1. When the action happens regularly or "Repetitive actions."

Marry goes shopping every weekend.
I usually take a bus to school.
I never want to see you again.
-- There are usually "adverb of frequency" in this type of sentence.--

Examples of adverb of frequency are

2. When the situation is true or always true.

The sun rises from the East.
I love you (well, at least, it is meant to be true.)

3. Use Present Simple Tense with behavior, habit or tradition

If the subject is the single and third person put an s after V1.
He speaks.
